The advanced journalism students at Texas Southern University are learning how to story tell through a cell phone device. Story telling can be done in many ways, but in order to be a successful multi-media journalist, they have to master creating a package.
A package is simply a minute and thirty-seconds video that includes natural sound, soundbites, and a standup.
Journalism professor Serbino- Sandifer Walker takes her class out and breaks down the basic steps of building a package. She introduces the key items needed to complete the task. Having a tripod, cellphone, and a microphone is all journalist needs.
Walker teaches the students how to properly interview a person, the key angles needed of a shot, and how to set the tripod up with a cellphone.
The students recorded Walker as she demonstrated how to set everything up. Once she was done with her lesson, the aspiring journalists helped each other record their stand up so they could incorporate it in their package.
“The whole purpose is to make sure we know how to do a package really well so when we go out to a location we do really well,” said Walker.
Walker wants the best for her students and pushes them each day so they can be well rounded journalists.
